RING OF FIRE

Hawaii, USA and Indonesia

The present eruption of Kilauea began in 1983 with a series of short-lived lava fountains that built the massive cinder-and-spatter cone of Pu`u` O`o. At present Pu`u `O`o crater erupts lava from a single vent. The style of the eruption is continuous, quiet effusion. The long-lived lava tube system, is delivering lava to the ocean.

A lava bubble bursts as it comes in contact with seawater.

Lava Lake

Lava outpouring filled a small depression. As it cools, the lava pool is being covered by dark solidified skin. Note the ropy surface of this flow.
Lava Tube Skylight

Skylight in a lava tube formed by the collapse of the tube roof above. The tube provides an excellent insulator that allows the lava to remain fluid and flow greater distances from the vent.

YASUR, Vanuatu Archipelago

A deafening explosion sends cannonade of molten rock hurtling high into the air. For a while they hang suspended, burning orange against the smoky background before plunging down like fiery rain.
YASUR, Tanna Island, Vanuatu

Yasur is a noisy volcano but causes little damage unless, of course, you get too close. This picture captures all three craters erupting simultaneously.

MARUM, Ambrym Island, Vanuatu

The Mbogon Niri Mbwelesu crater expels billowing cloud of volcanic gases. On the bottom of the crater, two orange-glowing pits hide lava lakes that are loudly thundering.
MARUM, Ambrym Island, Vanuatu

The lava lake, located inside a circular pit, has a diameter of 40 metres. Like a giant agitated washing machine, it is propelled by the escaping gases; huge bubbles blister and then blast a cannonade of molten rocks onto the walls.

Waiotapu (New Zealand)

Subterranean steam escaping from a mud pool near Waiotapu Thermal Area shatters mud into surreal shapes

MOUNT ST HELENS

Until 1980, this had been densely forested area. After the devastating eruption the life is still struggling to establish itself after so many years.

Rotorua (New Zealand)

The world famous Pohutu geyser can reach heights of up to 30 metres
Waiotapu (New Zealand)

Lady Knox Geyser erupts precisely at 10h15 am daily - but not through some miracle of mother nature.
Five pounds of soap powder poured into the vent of the geyser causes the water to boil, and the vent is then blocked with rags until the pressure builds sufficiently for the geyser to explode.
