STROMBOLI
Northeast crater pit 1/1 (right) and southwest crater (left) erupt simultaneously, while still red-hot rocks from the northeast crater pit 1/2 (middle) explosion dot the crater rim. |
STROMBOLI
Clots of molten lava burst from the summit crater to form luminous arcs through the sky in which individual glowing rocks trace incandescent parabolas. Collecting on the flanks of the cone, lava clots combined to stream down the slopes in fiery rivulets. |

ETNA
Seen from a large skylight, lava pours from the base of a spatter cone built atop a fissure on the flank of the Southeast crater, Etna, Sicily. |
ETNA
A hiker stares away from immense heat above the creeping trail of lava. This lava flow is travelling through a lava tube into a lava channel. The lava solidified along the edges of the flow building levees. |

ETNA
Sulphuric gases can be very irritating. The Bocca Nuova crater is scenically beautiful but when it steams and bubbles one becomes aware of its vast power and potential for destruction.
|
VULCANO
Tourists observe sulphur crystals in the La Fossa crater on Vulcano, last active in 1888. Sulphurous gases stream out of the vent at 400 degrees Centigrade from the deep. The island has given its name to all volcanoes. |
