VOLCANOES OF ECUADOR

Photo Gallery

Avenue of the Volcanoes
Ecuadorian Sierra is a land of earthquakes and volcanoes. Most active volcanoes in the region occur in belts produced by subduction of Pacific oceanic crust (descending Nazca plate that is essentially moving eastward at approximately 6cm per year) beneath the western edge of South American Plate (moving westward at approximately 2.5cm per year).

SANGAY: Reacting instinctively, an expedition member raises his arms in excitement as Sangay erupts at sunrise.

COTOPAXI

Sangay summit, 5300m asl.

As day breaks over Sangay summit, an eruption sends billowing cloud of steam and ash into the skies that is quickly dispersed by winds. Each explosion also triggers small rock avalanches.

TUNGURAHUA

A 2km ash plume rises above Tungurahua as a result of a vulcanian eruption.
TUNGURAHUA

A municipal notice in Banos indicates the evacuation direction, while a young couple finds the eruption cloud a good reason for romance.

ILLINIZAS

Illinizas, magnificent twin volcanoes, appear in all their grandeur high above the clouds. While Illiniza Norte (5126m, left) is not a technical climb, Illiniza Sur (5305m) is a top grade ice climb.

CHIMBORAZO

A view of the imposing Chimborazo. The volcano is the highest mountain in Ecuador; five great peaks rise to the sky, to a maximum altitude of 6.310 metres.
